All children need to grow into some level of independence, and Olivia is no different. Having the ability to move herself around where she wants to go is absolutely critical to her development. Her confidence, self-esteem, learning potential, and ultimately, her ability to grow into a thriving adult are all in jeopardy if she has to spend her life waiting on somebody else to move her from room to room.
There is nothing Olivia loves more than being outside. She sits on the porch for hours, pointing at the yard, the road, and down the street. But a typical power wheelchair can not go in the sand, on trails, in the snow, or through a cotton field.
The trade-off to the freedom, independence, and happiness that a power wheelchair can give to a girl like Olivia is the fact that they weigh hundreds of pounds. You can not fold them up and put them into your normal van or SUV. To have a power wheelchair, you must first have an accessible van to transport them. These converted vans provide the headspace that a full wheelchair requires, the automated safety locks that secure the passenger and the chair while driving, and a ramp so that Olivia can simply drive up, lock in, and drive out.
